Front Door Maintenance
Dear Homeowner,
Congratulations on the purchase of your new home. Cambridge Doors and Windows Inc. has manufactured and installed the Mahogany, Walnut or Alder wood entry door on your home.
We would like to give you some information about maintaining your door. Like a fine piece of wood furniture, your door will require some easy periodic maintenance to keep it looking good and to extend the life of the finish. Due to the extreme heat, sun, and humidity that we experience in Texas, it is essential to maintain the exterior finish of your door. We recommend that at least every other month you apply Guardsman Wood Polish to keep your new door clean and dirt free. DO NOT USE lemon oil or an oil-type wood finish protectant such as Old English Old Wood Treatment or Pledge. Oil will get in the pores of the wood and makes it very difficult when it’s time to re-top coat your door and will not bond very well. 
If dirt is allowed to build upon your door, it will rub the clear coat of urethane off of the door leaving the door exposed to cracking and warping. Excessive sunlight will break down the finish on the door as well. Guardsman Wood polish will help in slowing sunlight damage. Never pressure wash your new door or allow watering systems to come in contact with the door. Polishing the door does not guarantee the urethane will hold up indefinitely; at some point in time, your door will need to be refinished.
To prolong the life of the door it is recommended that you have your door re-coated every 12 months in lots of sunlight exposure and every 24 months with lite sun exposure. If you want to re-coat your door yourself, take steel wool and lightly sand the top coat of urethane off of your door. Apply a coat of the stain that was initially used to stain your door. Finally, either spray or brush a coat of urethane on your door to protect the stain. We use Minwax Wood Finish stain colors, and we use Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. Allow your door to dry at least one hour before closing it.
